Is custom e-commerce better than a template?

· 6 min read

Template platforms make it easy to start selling online, and for many businesses that is exactly right. But templates carry compounding costs that are easy to miss until they hurt.

Where templates win

Low upfront cost, quick setup and a large ecosystem of plugins. If you are validating a product or your requirements are standard, a template store is a sensible first step.

Where custom wins

Performance, checkout control and total cost at scale. Custom stores load faster, convert better and are not constrained by plugin conflicts or platform fees on every sale. Unique requirements — bundles, subscriptions, trade pricing, unusual fulfilment — often fight against templates and fit naturally in custom builds.

The honest answer

Start with the simplest thing that supports the business. Move to custom when the template is visibly limiting revenue, operations or growth — and plan the migration carefully so search rankings come with you.
